Many of us end the day by scrolling until our eyes get tired. A short reading habit can help you slow down, rest your mind and sleep more easily. The best part is that it only takes a few minutes to start.
Choose a set time
Pick a time that fits your evening, such as right after dinner or 30 minutes before bed. Doing it at the same time each day makes the habit feel natural much faster.
Make a reading corner
You do not need a library. A comfortable chair, a soft blanket and a lamp with warm light are enough. Keep your current book there so it is always waiting for you.
Start small
Aim for ten pages or ten minutes. Small goals are easy to keep, and on good nights you will naturally read more.
- Choose books you truly enjoy, not ones you feel you should read.
- Keep a short list of titles to read next.
- It is fine to stop a book that is not working for you.
Quick tip: Put your phone on charge in another room while you read. Out of sight really does mean out of mind.
Pair it with a warm drink
A cup of herbal tea or warm milk gives your brain a clear signal that the day is winding down. Over time, the ritual itself starts to feel relaxing.
Notice how you feel
After a week or two, think about how you feel in the mornings. Many people find they fall asleep faster and wake up a little more rested.
